Welp, it finally happened. The last of my sketchy patches failed today, and my muffler now hangs from two mounts and that’s it. Completely disconnected from the rest of the exhaust. I don’t really like straight pipes all the time with the old stuff banging against head shields. Solution: $100 catback. As far as I remember (it’s been a month ish since I’ve looked) everything header to cat is cleanish, ie, no rust holes (big enough I can’t patch with JB weld). My plan is to make sure I can detach the exhaust from the cat, then order the cheapest shittiest fart cannon I can, shipped directly to me from China.

Tell me why I shouldn’t, Oppo.

F art cannons, they don’t look good, rarely sound good, and usually are put on cars that you are embarrassed to have turned your head to look at. A well selected muffler will have none of the draw backs and a reputable muffler shop should be able to do something for you for under a two hundred.

Go to your local junkyard and see what they have first. Chinesium metal will rust and fail in interesting and unique ways. A mk3 VW is pretty common. I know the local LKQs near me are stocked high with exhaust pulls and mufflers and other bits for pennies compared to a new system.

In all yards by me, there is one Mk3 total, and it’s diesel, so probably n ot the same bolt ups. They’re not as common as five years ago.

Yeah, but $200 is more than I'm willing to spend

Because there is literally no metal to attach anything to. It's all fallen apart.

I’ll go against the grain here:

The cheap Ebay stainless catback systems sound decent, are extremely cheap, and hold up better than a muffler shop- hack job.

That being said, I like my cars too much to put an Ebay exhaust on them.

I've seen videos of chinesium cat backs with a silencer mounted in the tailpipe. It doesn't soumd horrifying honestly. Better than what I have now, for sure.

My friend has a Chinese exhaust on his WRX, it honestly sounds/looks just as good as the guys spending thousands on their exhausts. He’s had it on there for 5+ years now and it has no sign of giving up.

Was his a $100 ebay one? I'm gonna go as cheap as possible (college), I just want something that won't bang around underneat like I have now.

I think his whole exhaust system was under $300. I believe $120 for the cat back, $150 for the turbo to cat back.

I have an ebay catback on my OBXT and it honestly sounds great and has been holding up well for over a year and 2 winters now. That said it wasn’t a $100 one so your mileage may vary

I'm gonna take a peak tomorrow and see if cat forward is still good. AFAIK that bit is original, while cat back is junkyard.

I mean, a proper exhaust can't possibly cost that much more.

Lowest quote from an exhaust shop (for just a straight pipe) was $270.

so 300$ for a full exhaust. sounds like a deal to me.

When a chineseum exhaust is going to disintegrate just as fast as the one you have... yeah. that’s a deal.

Nah, most chinesium stuff is good for like, 3 years on the low side. I don’t intend to daily this much longer.

That is impressive lol. Well, I vote against it for what it is worth . Even if it is ebay maybe something other than a fart cannon that ends in a muffler shouldn’t be too difficult to find. Practicall y, my experience with ebay exhaust is that I blew through two headers at the flange. It seems like they like to fusion weld with a TIG so you get really weak material at the joints.

Right. I’m not getting an ebay header though. I poked around underneath earlier, headers and everything up to the cat is good still and mostly rust-free. The only not stock bits of exhaust were cat to tailpipe.

I’m just pointing out the construction technique that seems to be the norm. You say you are unwilling to spend more than $100, well, not even worth spending that $100 if it is going to fall apart in a couple months, unless that is all you are hoping for.

Unlikely it’ll fail that quick. Ebay exhausts are very hit or miss. I’m okay with having this one fail in a year or two and getting a real one put on at that point.

This is how it sounds now.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UoXbeQnXIa8LQAz-bgnCXvY4iVGnpLgw/view?usp=sharing

The worst case is it goes back to sounding this way. I need something that doesn’t dump exhaust into the car from below when I drive with the windows closed. That is the bare minimum standard I am chasing.

Seems like you have your justification. Not sure you need much more input :) . I do know people who have tried to save or beef up ebay systems and welded up the flanges, but the nature of fusion welds is it pulls material so it just snapped right above where the welds were. To save it you would have had to weld a sleeve over where the welds were and at that point, not much more work to do a bespoke exhaust. It looks like you live in a rusty climate, over here it is more a tendency of people wanting exhaust so muffler shops are much more reasonable, vs I imagine people needing exhaust where they can extort a bit more out of you.

B eing 3/3 on eBay purchases for Jan Van (SHO slicer wheels, LED conversion kit, SVT Cobra badges), I’d say go for it. I’m waiting until the summer to do some exhaust work. But will definitely look around eBay for deals
